1. Introduction:

Calpino is adjoined to the larger town of Fermignano in the Marche area of Italy. Nearby is the picturesque city of Urbino with it's ancient buildings and monastery commanding an elevated position over the surrounding villages. Calpino is a relatively new parish which serves the local small industries - mainly concerned with the manufacture of furniture.

In September 2002 a link was established between our two parishes as a result of an initiative between St. Albans and the Diocese of Urbino in Italy. Canon Ian Arthur and his wife Heather visited Calpino  where they met Don Peppino and the members of his Church . For four days they were given a royal welcome, shown around the district  and involved in ecumenical discussion and worship. This included a meeting with the Archbishop of Urbino where greetings from Bishop Christopher were conveyed.

As a result of a return invitation, a brief visit to Sharnbrook by three young men from Calpino followed at the end of December 2002 and arrangements made for a larger group to follow in May 2003.  We are all most grateful for Ian and Heather who had made meticulous plans and preparations for this visit.

2. Visit to Sharnbrook 1st.- 5th. May 2003.

In the early hours of Ist. May fourteen weary travellers arrived in Sharnbrook and were settled with their hosts who would give them hospitality for the weekend. Later that day we travelled with our visitors to St. Albans for a guided tour of the Abbey and a meeting with Bishop Christopher (Hertford) who had visited the Urbino Diocese. Back in Sharnbrook we had a meeting with representatives of the Sharnbrook Churches Together.

The next day we set off for London by coach for a guided tour by Ian and a chance for our friends to spend some time around St. Pauls Cathedral and the Westmister area.  Saturday gave our visitors space for a few local visits and then in the evening we all enjoyed a barbeque in the grounds of Sharnbrook House sharing in each other's conversation and singing.

Sunday was the climax of the weekend with two very moving acts of worship. At our dual language Sung Eucharist in the morning , Don Peppino gave a short address through an interpreter which underlined the importance of our common Christian bonds and future opportunity to grow further together. Don Peppino and all our visitors received a blessing from Canon Ian Arthur . As a gift to the people of Calpino we presented a plate depicting Sharnbrook Church which had been made by a local village potter. As a symbol of our unity, the people of Calpino have made a beautiful wooden cross for us. It is inset with glass panes painted with the Easter story by their young people. Unfortunately, this was too big to bring with them and so they presented us with a framed picture of it until it can be collected or delivered.  Following an excellent Parish Lunch in the village hall, Don Peppino celebrated  Mass in St. Peters at 5.0 p.m which was well attended by our local Catholic friends and some Italians in the area.

On Monday morning  we said our fond farewells to our guests feeling that in just a few days we had made true and lasting relationships with a wonderful group of people and that our Church family had been spiritually uplifted by the whole experience.

3. Ecumenical Celebrations in Urbino, Fano and Pesaro Diocese 22nd.- 29th. Jan. 2004

Ian Arthur, Colin Scott, Anne Osborn, Barbara Woplin and Jane Roberts left Stanstead for Ancona where we were met and transported to our hosts in the parish of Calpino. After a warm welcome dinner that night we were taken on Friday 23rd. for a tour of the magnificent Dukes Palace in Urbino and the recently refurbished Cathedral. We had by then been joined by the Bishop of Bedford – Richard Inwood, his wife and two other clergy from England.

In the evening we took part in the first of the three ecumenical services in Pesaro, where we met up with a priest and lay people from Denmark, and representatives of the Rumanian Orthodox. The service was based on the message of peace and we were all allocated a reading or prayer to lead. Short testimonies by the leading Church representatives were also given. This general form was to be used for all three diocesan events. The Cathedral was full and with the simple music we found it very moving and felt privileged to be amongst our fellow Christians – particularly at the sharing of ‘The Peace’ when we all greeted each other warmly.

On Saturday 24th. we travelled to Fano where we had a very meaningful ‘round table’ with the local area representatives being also joined by a Greek Orthodox Priest. Following a short tour of Fano it was time for the second service in the series again in a full cathedral and led by the Bishop of Fano. Again - a very enriching experience. On Sunday, following a short Anglican Communion service at 10.00 am in Calpino, we joined the local parish of ‘Christ the Worker’ at their main morning Mass. We took part by introducing ourselves and leading an English worship song that we had rehearsed with Ubaldo and their choir. We  each received a blessing and at the end of the service there was an exchange of gifts where we all received beautifully made wooden rainbows which had been used in the ecumenical services as a symbol of God’s enduring love between heaven and earth. Following lunch at ‘Castelcavallino’- a village high up near Urbino and the site of a  Diocesan meeting centre, we moved on to Urbino for the final ecumenical service. Although a fall of snow had reduced the congregation slightly it was another very moving act of worship and followed by a chance to say goodbye to our Danish and Orthodox friends.

Before we left Ancona on the Monday 29th. we were greeted by the deputy mayor of Calpino and Fermignano at a short reception where links with youth work and future initiatives were discussed.  We then paid a warm farewell to our friends in Calpino following an important and very memorable few days with our fellow Christians.

4. Visit to Calpino 29th. April - 4th. May 2004

Fifteen members of St. Peter's visited our link Parish of 'Christ The Worker' Calpino for more of an informal visit. We were again shown wonderful warmth and hospitality by our hosts. We enjoyed visits to Urbino, Florence, Fano and nearby Fermignano. We were entertained at a barbeque on Sunday evening following  our joint services earlier in the day. 5. Canon Ian Arthur's final service - 13th. June 2004

We were all delighted that Ubaldo Ragnoni from Calpino was able to attend Ian's final service and celebration lunch. He brought best wishes from Don Peppino and all our friends there. What made it more special was that the beautiful cross which they had made for us last year, also arrived just two days before and Ubaldo was able to present it as a surprise for Ian at the service. The pictures show the presentation and by  Ubaldo and the cross installed in St. Peter's Sanctuary.

6. 'Christ the Worker' - Calpino - 50th. Anniversary Celebrations - May 5th.-9th. 2005

Click to EnlargeThree members from St. Peter’s, Colin and Hazel Scott and David Thomas – attended a special weekend between 5th.- 9th. May, to celebrate the 50th. anniversary of the Calpino Church and parish. On arrival at Castelcavalino near Urbino we were welcomed at the diocesan youth centre beautifully constructed around the ancient Church.  Ian and Heather Arthur joined us for the weekend, taking a break from their caravan holiday in the area. The views from this hostel and around Urbino are stunning and we were fortunate to have excellent weather.

The weekend was split into three main activities:

Click to Enlargea)  On Friday – five representatives from the Rumanian Orthodox Church (including two young deacons and a priest) together with three youth leaders from Denmark joined local young people and priests from the three dioceses to discuss ways forward for European Ecumenism. This was led by a priest from the St. Egidio community which is actively involved in aid projects across the world.  The afternoon workshops with smaller groups produced firm proposals to go forward to the world youth event to be held later this year in Cologne.

Click to Enlarge    b)   Saturday saw the main celebration event, drawing in 200 local young people to join the foreign delegations for an act of worship in the ‘Palatenda’ - a large Marquee in Calpino.  Rev. John Williams together with three youth workers from Bishop Stortford representing St. Albans arrived to join this event. The service was based on readings, music and actions depicting seven aspects of the Church as ‘pillars’ supporting the Christian church and unity. These were ‘The Word’, ‘Baptism’, ‘Universal Fraternity’, ‘Respect for Life’, ‘Responsible use of Resources’, ‘The Eucharist’ and ‘Commitment to Unity’.  Each was heralded by the procession of a lighted           lamp. Also during the service a large wall was constructed from bricks, finally portraying the face of Jesus – showing how we all contribute to Church unity.  The service was lively and informal with modern worship songs and some quieter reflective music. A celebration meal followed the event.

Click to Enlarge  c) Sunday was the occasion to celebrate the 50th. Anniversary of the Church and Parish of Calpino and was particularly why we had wanted to be present. Canon Ian and members of the foreign delegations were again actively involved in the communion service. There was standing room only in the small but beautiful church.  As a gift to mark the occasion, St. Peter’s had commissioned a Stole to be made by the sisters of Turvey Abbey and this was presented at the end of the service.  Don Peppino, the parish priest was very appreciative and moved by this gift.

Again the service was followed by a meal together followed by music and dancing in the  ‘Palatenda’.

As on previous visits to Calpino, we were very enthused by all the weekends’ events and the insight into the wider Christian church and its universal ecumenical opportunities.

7.    Visit to Calpino and Pilgrimage to Assisi led by Bishop Christopher Herbert of St. Albans 8th-17th. June 2006

Early in 2005 Bishop Christopher Herbert of St. Alban’s suggested that he lead a Pilgrimage to Assisi so that all the parishes in the diocese with Italian links could participate in a joint venture. The date of  13-17th. June 2006 was fixed and following preliminary planning and awareness sessions, a total of  45 people in the diocese (9 from St. Peter’s Sharnbrook ) signed up to go. As with the other respective parishes, we wanted to combine this with a visit to our link parish of Calpino and arranged to arrive there on Thursday 8th. June and stay until Monday 13th. when we would join the other Anglicans and the Bishop in Assisi. This was also the first time Robert and Caroline Evens had visited Calpino

Calpino:
As usual we were given wonderful hospitality over the weekend 8th- 12th. June and were treated to memorable visits to Gradara - near Pesaro and San Leone near San Marino. These were two hill hamlets with fortresses giving us wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. We were able to take our normal active part in the main Sunday morning celebration following our own Anglican Eucharist and visited the sisters of the St. Clare Monastry in Urbino in the afternoon.  Great fellowship and singing was enjoyed on Sunday evening following the barbeque and we said goodbye to many of our old friends before departing for Assisi on Monday.

Assisi:  Joining the Bishop of St. Albans and our friends from the other link parishes we were taken by coach to Assisi on Monday afternoon to stay at the Domus Pacis Hotel.   Having received briefings from Rev. Jules Bergquist she guided us around Assisi on the Tuesday visiting Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Porzioncola where St. Francis started his order and then up to the Piazza del Commun. We had a Eucharist service at the small Church of St. Stefano and visited the Church of 'St. James on the broken wall'. Wednesday we had  two local guides to lead us around the amazing Basilica of St. Francis and then the lower part of the city including the Basilica of St. Clare and the Monastry of San Damiano where St. Clare founded her order of 'The poor Clares' and spent forty years of her life. Thursday was a free day and the Sharnbrook contingent went off to Perugia - the main Umbrian centre and saw some of the features including the Cathedral, The National Umbrian Art gallery and the Fontana Maggiore. The main event Friday started with the meeting up with some of our Italian hosts at 5.00 p.m. for a pre-dinner reception with the Archbishop of Pesaro and Bishop Christopher. After dinner together we were transported to the Basilica where we celebrated a joint act of worship in the tomb of St. Francis. This was a special occasion given the setting and many contributed to the intercessions to give thanks and pray for unity and peace. Following the service we had a further exceptional treat by being taken to the side gallery of the Basilica where we had magnificent views of Assisi at night.

Saturday we started our walking pilgrimage of the city with a service by the cross of St. Damiano in the St. Clare Basilica. We had further short acts of worship at the Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, St. Stefano and  the Church of 'St. James on the broken wall' where we each deposited the name on paper of a personal  ‘encumbrance’  to our faith and ‘discarded’ it by placing it in front of the altar.  After a final lunch at the hotel we had our final act of worship in the modern chapel behind Santa Maria degli Angeli where Bishop Christopher expressed the thanks of us all for the wonderful experiences and organization of the week by Rev. Jules,  Rev. John Williams, Alex Sharp and our Italian hosts. Following fond farewells to all our friends we joined the coach to take us with Bishop Christopher to Forli for our 10. 30 p.m. flight home.

8. Visit to Calpino, Urbino and Castelcavallino  1st - 5th. November 2007

Ten people from St. Peter's Sharnbrook including Robert Evens and his wife Caroline arranged to visit our link parish - Calpino over the weekend 1st. – 5th. November and provide a ‘thank you’ meal for our host families and friends there. Don Peppino, the parish priest has been unwell and on sabbatical for the last year.  We wanted to make a gesture of good will to our friends in Calpino and try to repay some of their wonderful love and hospitality shown to us on our previous visits. The venue chosen was a house owned by the Urbino diocese at Castelcavallino, a beautiful village around 8 km North of Urbino and a convenient distance from Calpino. It contained a hall which provided suitable space for the forty guests which we invited from the parish.  The evening was enjoyable and succesful.  Don Peppino was fortunately able to join us for the meal and together with Ubaldo and Don Fabio (who is currently looking after the parish) expressed the thanks of all after the meal.

Following some sightseeing in Urbino on Saturday with lunch at the seminary, we were invited to observe an orthodox wedding held in the seminary chapel followed by a meeting with the orthodox priest Fr. Victor.

On Sunday we enjoyed our usual joint act of worship at the main Mass in the Church of ‘Christ the Worker’ in Calpino at which Robert gave the address. This was followed by lunch provided for us by the ladies of the parish in the local Red Cross hall. Some pictures of the weekend follow.

9.    Visit by Italian Delegation  from the dioceses of Fano, Pesaro and Urbino headed by
      Archbishop Coccia of  Pesaro.   W
eek of Prayer for Christian Unity  - 19th to 21st January 2008.

Bishop Christopher Herbert of St. Alban’s invited the above delegation for this most important visit – the first time our Italian link diocese had visited England for the ‘Week of Prayer and Christian Unity.’  Sharnbrook was host to four of the nineteen strong delegation:-  Don Giorgio Paolini, ecumenical delegate for Pesaro diocese, don Francesco Pierpaoli – regional responsibility for young people, Ubaldo Ragnoni – Urbino and Calpino representative and Raffaella Antonioli from Borgo Sta Maria parish in Pesaro.

Following their arrival on Saturday 19th. and a short time in Sharnbrook, our four guests with Robert Evens and Colin Scott attended a special event organised for the whole delegation and  hosts at Redbourn Village Hall.   Following an enjoyable meal Bishop Christopher gave a presentation which highlighted the facts, figures and many challenges faced by the diocese. It also told of the many projects achieving success, particularly work with young people in and around the Abbey.

Following what seemed a short night, our four Sharnbrook guests were back in  St. Peter’s at 9.00 a.m. Sunday morning for their own Mass.  Don Giorgio celebrated with the assistance of don Francesco. This was shortly followed at 10.15 a.m. by our own Churches Together Unity service. We were joined by the Felmersham  congregation as well as our Catholic and Methodist friends from Sharnbrook.

A lunch followed at 12.30 p.m. in St. Peter’s Room where our four guests were joined by some of our own host families and friends. We were delighted to have Canon Ian Arthur and his wife Heather with us for this occasion. Following a word of thanks by Ubaldo on behalf of our Italian guests, don Francesco presented Robert with a green Stole.

At 2.15 p.m. fifteen people from Sharmnbrook accompanied our four guests in the ‘Villager’ and one car to St. Alban’s Abbey where the main event of the weekend was to start  at 4.00 p.m.   A packed Abbey joined in a short welcoming act of worship for the delegation and  then followed a feast  of music by the  London Community Gospel Choir and  the Salvation Army band.  Pam Rhodes then gave her recollections of many years of ‘Songs of Praise’ and her thoughts on its important role in Christian outreach and music.  Other stands and activities were also being presented in the Abbey during this period before the main service which began at  6.30 p.m. The service was a true celebration of the Centenary of the week of prayer and Christian Unity. The Dean – Dr. Jeffrey John gave the welcome prayer and other prayers and readings were led by Major Gerald Peacock of the Salvation Army, Bishop Samuel Campbell – the New Testament Church of God, Ann Brown – Chair of Essex and Herts Methodist Church and Revd. Roberta Rominger – Moderator of the  Thames North Synod of the United Reformed Church. The preacher was Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, OP. Another feast of music was enjoyed by the visiting musicians and particularly the Abbey Choir  who sang the Nunc Dimittis by Gustav Holst and an anthem by Philip Moore.

The climax was the signing of an agreement by Bishop Christopher and the Archbishop of Pesaro.  The agreement read as follows:

We the undersigned, representatives of the dioceses of Fano,
Urbino and Pesaro and the diocese of St Albans, through the grace of God, the Holy Trinity, acknowledge with thanksgiving and delight the friendship we enjoy.

On this one hundredth anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity we commit ourselves to deepening our companionship in our Lord Jesus Christ, to proclaiming the Gospel in Word and Sacrament, and through prayer, study, and the development of mutual respect and understanding will continue to seek for that unity which our Lord offers as his gift to the Church and to the world.

10.  Visit to Sharnbrook and an Ordination service at St. Albans 25th.- 30th. September 2008

This visit had a dual purpose. 1) A group from from our link diocese of Urbino and Fano had been invited to attend the ordination of Rev. Oliver Learmont from St. Mary's Church Hitchin. Oliver had visited the link diocese as interpreter for Bishop Christopher earlier in the year and invited representatives to attend his ordination to be held on Sunday 28th. September at St. Alban's Abbey.  2) It presented an opportunity for Sharnbrook parish to return the hospitality for several visits to Calpino over the last five years.

The group consisted of don Fabio (assistant priest from Fermignano and Calpino), Carla Pandolfi, Olidano and their grandson Lorenzo, Silvia Crivelli, Flavia Catena and her son Davide.

For most of the group it was their first time in England and so we arranged trips to Cambridge and London on the 26th. and 27th. respectively to show them places of interest. On Friday evening we had a joint 'Act of Worship' in St. Peter's Sharnbrook followed by a meal and fellowship in our Church room. Gifts between Sharnbrook and Calpino were exchanged remembering don Peppino who had been unable to come on this occasion. The ordination on Sunday at the Abbey was a very special occasion with a  welcome to our guests from Bishop Christopher (In Italian). He was also able to give them a blessing at the communion. An enjoyable reception at Oliver's house followed. Monday was a more relaxed day visiting nearby Bedford and enjoying a final joint meal at the 'Pizza Hut'.   Early on Tuesday the group departed for home concluding a very meaningful and enjoyable weekend for all concerned.

11. Sharnbrook - Calpino Link – Pilgrimage to Rome 18th. – 25th. June 2009

St. Paul was thought to have been born around eight years after Jesus and therefore a bimillenium jubilee year was inaugurated in Rome to run until June 29 2009 and called ‘The Pauline Year’. St. Peter’s received an invitation from the Urbino diocese in the Marche region of Italy, to join an ecumenical pilgrimage to Rome over the weekend 20-21st. June in order to visit the main sites associated with St. Paul.

Accordingly a group of nine from St. Peter’s set off on Thursday 18th. June bound for Rimini where we were transported to Urbino to join our friends in Calpino for an evening act of worship followed by dinner. As usual we were given a royal welcome and many friends from previous visits arrived to greet us. Prior to our visit we had raised a special appeal for the Italian Earthquake and they were very appreciative and moved by the news of our donation to date of over £600. My thanks to all who contributed to this appeal. On Friday we explored Urbino and later in the day were treated to a tour of the Ducal Palace where an exhibition of Raffaello’s artwork was also displayed.

A 5 a.m. start on Saturday saw us leave with forty other pilgrims for Rome by coach. It was a truly ecumenical mix which included twenty people from the orthodox faith around Urbino led by their priest Fr. Victor with don Peppino and don Fabio leading the Catholic group.

On arrival in Rome our first stop was the ‘Abbey of the three fountains’ – now a Benedictine monastery but also containing the site of the imprisonment and execution of St. Paul. Following a short act of worship and lunch we moved on to the Vatican and the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica and were given a tour by our excellent guide Paula, who really looked after our Anglican contingent with her excellent command of English. We then moved on to the main Basilica and place of burial of St. Paul – ‘St Paul’s outside the walls’ for evening vespers and thence to our Hotel at Torre Maura.

Early on Sunday we arrived at the Basilica of St. John Lateran – the original ‘Mother Church’ and part of the papal residence until 1305 and the building of St. Peter’s. The tour of the magnificent building included the 14th. C. tabernacle containing the relics of St. Peter and St. Paul.  In a nearby building was the ‘Holy Staircase’, brought by Helen -the mother of Constantine - from Jerusalem.

We then returned to ‘St. Paul’s outside the walls’ for a detailed tour of the Church and the Tomb of St. Paul and then the climax of the pilgrimage – an ecumenical Mass – at the main altar concelebrated by don Peppino and don Fabio. We were able to join in the intercessions and received a blessing at the communion – making for a very moving and meaningful experience.

Following a final lunch together, the Anglican group said goodbye to our returning friends and spent a few extra days in Rome enjoying the sights and the food.
